SHS Commandment 5

Thou shalt experience and know thy complete purity and innocence and yet pay seasoned and careful attention to the timing of Love.

The Song of Songs commands us to be Lovers and to know our love as something completely innocent and pure. love requires nothing in return. love leaves little room for shame, fear, or ulterior motives. In the heart of hearts lies the sweet radiance of our true self underneath all the layers of the false self. We are commanded to allow that radiance to shine forth into this world. Although this shining Love is completely innocent, through Life’s lessons we must acquire the wisdom tha tLove holds in store for us. These words of warning are repeated three times:

Daughters of Jerusalem, swear to me,
By the gazelles, by the deer in the field,
That you will not awaken love until it is ripe.     Song of Songs 3:5

As the powerful forces of Love move through us, we bring all of our wisdom and sensitivity to bear. Timing is crucial. The right word spoken at the wrong time can destroy Life rather than create it. We must open ourselves to discerning the rhythms and tides of Love: knowing when to act, when to speak, when to remain silent, and how to wait for the Beloved.
