The Divine Power of Our Song

Passionately lifting up the God-spark, we sing and chant your power through us. (Psalm 21:14)

The God-spark is in us, though sometimes it is dim, hidden and buried under layers of defense. When we lift up that Divine essence in song, God sings through us, and we become healers for the world. It takes unself-conscious courage and faith to sing this way and let God come through us. But when we can get our egos out of the way, we are filled with Divine strength and beauty that will overflow into the world.

This Psalm gives us this blessing that we can lavish on each other. This practice requires us to look deeply into the heart of another and see their vast potential unfolding through the flow of grace. And then we celebrate their fulfilment as if it’s already here. God, as Cosmos, calls me out of my narrow perspectives into the widest possible view of Reality. In that spaciousness I am freed from my habits of constriction and reactivity. When God returns and restores the fortunes of His people,
Jacob will exult, Israel will rejoice. (Psalm 14:7 and Psalm 53:7)

Even when it’s looking bad, with bullies in charge, and the poor oppressed, and cynicism reigning its disguised terror … still we look to God who is stirring in us beneath our despair. In the depths of our captivity a vision arises: God returning to our midst to free us from greed, fear and the illusions of separation. As God finds a home within us, we return home to ourselves, to our joy, and to the truth of our connection.
